Photographer Profile: Callie Shell

Since before the name Barack Obama was known to Americans and even some citizens of Illinois, Callie Shell was photographing our President. She began covering Obama when he traveled in one car. No motorcade, no large pool of media, and no Secret Service. Shell met Obama backstage when she was covering former Presidential Candidate John Kerry. After the event, she sent more photos of Obama to her editor than Kerry. When asked why, she said, "I do not know. I just have a feeling about him. I think he will be important down the road." From that moment, Shell stuck with Obama, and it has paid off. Working for Time Magazine, Shell received unbelievable access inside Obama's exclusive events and the now First Family's time together. Now that Obama is in office, Shell is still covering him. When Obama made a surprise visit to Iraq this week, Shell was aboard Air Force One to photograph the Obama Staff and Secret Service leaders discussing logistics of the trip. The photographs she has taken reveal the human side of Obama and give a behind-the-scenes look at our President. Below are some links to some of her Time photo essays and an article about her. I encourage you to view them!
